What is a personality disorder?

Our personalities are comprised of the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that make us unique and help define who we are. An individual’s personality is influenced by many factors including their personal experiences, environment, and genetics.  A personality disorder is a rigid way of thinking, feeling, and behaving that causes significant distress and pain for an individual and those who love them and impairs their ability to live a satisfying and fulfilling life.
